I suppose that labor unions perform a useful role in today’s society. I'd like to explain my opinion from the two perspectives. One of the perspectives is how the society has changed regarding this issue, and another is what is a possible counterargument against my opinion.

Firstly, the society has changed largely. The past common sense and experience are not always applicable to the modern society. We need to change our way of thinking as the society changes.

During the period of high economic growth, most companies gave their workers lifetime employment and really took care of them. But companies in recent years tend to overwork their employees to pursue profit. Furthermore, without labor unions, companies would try to reduce their wages as much as possible. Under this situation, labor unions are indispensable to protect workers' rights.

Secondly, this topic is controversial and I think everyone never agrees on a single opinion. Everyone has each position and experience. It is better to consider opinion from different viewpoints before concluding than to ignore it.

It is true that employees in some companies are getting along well with the employers without labor unions, and many labor unions just exist and does not function virtually. However, the existence of labor unions deters companies from violating their workers' rights, and if a company violates, the worker in the labor union is able to oppose it more strongly than an individual.


In conclusion, I believe that labor unions perform a useful role in today’s society. In addition to that, it may be a good idea to make some kind of consensus in the society about this issue in order to make the society better. Thank you.
