I suppose that sumo has a role to play in modern Japanese society. I'd like to explain my opinion from the two perspectives. One of the perspectives is how the society has changed regarding this issue, and another is what is a possible counterargument against my opinion.

Firstly, the society has changed largely. The past common sense and experience are not always applicable to the modern society. We need to change our way of thinking as the society changes.

Sumo is Japan's national sport, and it attracts Japanese people popularly. Sumo is not only to have a test of strength, but also is connected to the suit-and-tie fields of martial arts. It may tell us civility, cordiality and art of self-defense, which is essential for surviving.

Secondly, this topic is controversial and I think everyone never agrees on a single opinion. Everyone has each position and experience. It is better to consider opinion from different viewpoints before concluding than to ignore it.

Some say that Sumo wrestlers who are naked except for their loincloth, which gives foreigners a feeling of strangeness. Sumo has established the traditions in an episode of Chronicles of Japan and A Record of Ancient Matters and come down to us through many generations. Therefore, the manner and past practice of Sumo traditional stand for Japanese traditional culture.
